Last year around this time, when I set my goal for this year, 4,000 seemed like a lot of miles. After all, at the time I'd been riding only nine months. Still, when I broke it down into what I thought I could do each month, it looked like a stretch, but achievable.
A few times this year I had my doubts. Especially from mid-summer to early autumn when I was working overtime every week. After coming up hundreds of miles short each month for three months in a row I thought, well, maybe next year.
I met 4,000 miles on Thanksgiving, largely due to the mild autumn weather and a light work schedule.
Thinking about a challenge goal for the rest of the year, another 5% seemed too easy. Ten percent seemed a little high, given potentially uncooperative winter weather.
On a lark, I chose my county sales tax rate, 8%, as a challenge goal.
I met my challenge goal tonight, 4,320 miles, with 0.67 miles to spare, and three riding days to go.
Yippie!

Great job Bruce,
I know the feeling you had when you said "maybe next year"
I needed 333 miles a month as my average to get 4000 just like you.
I didn't panic in April when coaching little league, a bad chest cold and lots of rain held me to 189 miles. But I was a bit worried.
I was worried again when I had a nasty crash in October and could not ride for 10 days until I healed up.
You must have faced your own gut checks also and somehow just kept clicking in.
Great job

Mayor: You have 1,400 in four or five months. That's good enough to shoot for your own 4,000 (or more) in '08!
Mark: Thanks. You're not doing so shabby against your goal either.
Lance: Congrats on your 4K! I crashed badly on the Monday night before Reunion 2007. I rode with a splint on my left wrist all that weekend. I should have been off the bike, but how could I sit around camp for the reunion? If I'd thought of it as 333 miles a month, it would have been tougher. It seemed easy when I thought of it as 11 miles a day.

Whats a sales tax?! I have some miles I haven't counted yet as after reaching my goal it didn't seem so important, actually I want to sell them cheap, no tax!

Bruce: We had similar goals this year. 4,000 miles seemed a stretch last year at this time, when I was thinking of a goal for the year. Now, I am trying to reach 5,000 just to round out the overage. I feel like Felix Unger.
Still, next year I think I will keep the goal at 4K which seems a reasonable balance between the road and other obligations. This year I decided to take drugs to make it easier, and didn't know where I was half the time..... just kidding.

4,000 was my goal, too, but I won't make it. But I still came pretty close, considering....
considering that in May, I was told I needed heart valve replacement/aneurism repair and that I had to take it "really easy" until the surgery.
considering that in July, I had the surgery and was totally off the bike for 8 weeks.
All in all, I'm happy to be here. Wait till next year!
John
